Refugee women and girls experience an added layer of instability, due to a lack of familial and institutional support when they arrive in unknown and often hostile environments. Since the beginning of what has been dubbed the ‘Venezuelan refugee crisis’, we have seen gruesome crimes against Venezuelan and other migrant women.
𝘐𝘯 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘑𝘚𝘊 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤, 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 484 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢 6 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘥, 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 0 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.
As in naught … as in not 1 single individual has been held accountable for the sexual exploitation of these women. Impunity for offenders and a lack of official statistics on these crimes persist and our respective governments have been slow to address these challenges.
The poisonous mixture of socioeconomic instability, patriarchy and colourism results is pain, suffering and DEATH to a disproportionate amount of women.
📍sensitisation activity geared towards migrants, refugees in particular, on their rights and courses for redress within the Trinidad and Tobago justice system.
📍ensure that the language barrier is overcome with a team of professional interpreters to ensure free flow of accurate information and reports.
